MagNa launches new brochure on innovative brine valorisation technology

The European project MagNa has published a new brochure presenting its innovative approach to transforming seawater desalination brines into valuable raw materials. The publication is now available in the Resources section of the project website and it provides an overview of the project’s objectives, technologies and expected impacts.

The brochure explains the project’s technological treatment process and its key objectives, which include validating the quality of the recovered products, demonstrating the replicability of the solution across different desalination facilities, and developing a viable commercialisation strategy supported by performance indicators. 

Once fully operational, the MagNa system is expected to treat 6.5 m³ of seawater per hour, with an estimated annual production target of 65 tonnes of magnesium hydroxide and 1,259 tonnes of sodium chloride, at its demonstration site in Tarragona, Spain.

The brochure includes an infographic that explains the treatment train of the seawater brine, which goes through a pressurised membrane technologies and an evaporation-crystallisation unit to obtain high-purity sodium chloride (NaCI), and it passes through refining stages and a specialised reactor to obtain high-purity magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH)₂.

MagNa is led by Cetaqua-Technology Centre in collaboration with AITASA (Aigües Industrials de Tarragona, S.A.), Veolia and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, and is co-funded by the EU’s EIT RawMaterials programme.
